Castles in Chiba Prefecture

At a glance

The enjoyment of castles is the beauty of the castle tower, the buildings, the steepness of the stone walls, the emptiness of castle ruins with no buildings remaining, gourmet food, and time travel. Castles in Chiba Prefecture are characterized by their museums. Some castles are museums, while others have museums in separate buildings. Museums offer a glimpse into the history of the area.
However, for wheelchair users, castles are not necessarily barrier-free, and there are two major barriers. First, most castles are mountain castles, and there is a continuous slope to the main castle. As a barrier-free measure, there are examples where parking lots are installed near the main castle. The next barrier is moving up and down to the castle tower, but only two of the five castles introduced here have elevators. In these two cases, wheelchair users cannot go up to the castle tower.

The experiential charm

Sakura Castle Ruins Park was established within the ruins of Hirajo Castle, and many remains of the castle, including the remains of the castle tower and the dry moat, remain. The remains of the castle tower and the huge horse-drawn moat are must-sees.
At the Sekiyado Castle Museum, there is a replica castle tower (with elevator) modeled after the Gosankai Yagura. About 500 meters from there, there is a stone monument indicating the remains of the main castle.
Inohana Castle has a replica castle tower (with elevator) built to serve as a local history museum. The surrounding area has been developed into a park, and includes the remains of the main citadel and a Japanese garden.
At Kururi Castle, vehicles are not permitted on the approach to the castle and museum (170m to the castle tower) from the car park, but disabled people can drive vehicles up the road.
There is a parking lot in front of the Japanese garden below the summit square where the main citadel of Tateyama Castle is located. The path to the square is about 100m long. There are no elevators inside Tateyama Castle.
