At a glance

Choshi Fishing Port is made up of three wholesale markets. At the First Wholesale Market, raw tuna is mainly landed, and you can also observe the direct sales shop where you can eat fresh fish and the bidding process. At the Second and Third Wholesale Markets, mackerel, pacific saury, sardines, and more are landed. You can get a close-up look at fishing boats and seagulls, so it's recommended to take a leisurely stroll around the fishing port while feeling the sea breeze. There are also shops around the fishing port that open early in the morning for the fishermen, so why not have a leisurely breakfast after watching the auction?

High-yield fish

Highly-caught fish such as mackerel, sardines, and pacific saury.The sardines caught between May and July are called "early summer sardines" and are known to be particularly fat and round, being the fattiest during the year.

Migratory fish

Migratory fish such as bonito and tuna.A major feature of the tuna landed at Choshi Fishing Port is that it is "fresh" tuna, not frozen.

Coastal fish

Approximately 200 species of coastal fish, including demersal fish such as alfonsino, flounder, and sole.Golden eye snapper is known nationwide as "Choshi Tsurikinme" and is a high-end brand fish.

Saba bo-zushi is made by pickling salted mackerel (without the head and tail) in vinegar, placing it on vinegared rice and eating it in a rod shape.

Choshi Tsurikinme(alfonsin) is a fishing ground that is said to be the northernmost limit of the country for alfonsino fishing, and about 40 small boats from the Togawa area catch the fish using vertical line fishing.
