Because the stratum in Tabuchi, Ichihara City, was recognized as a Global Standard Site for Geological Time Boundaries (GSSP), it was decided to name the period from approximately 774,000 to 129,000 years ago "Chibanian."
What is Chibanian? Why does the earth's magnetic field reverse? Do you know? The geological formations along the Yoro River in Tabuchi, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture were certified as the first GSSP in Japan on January 17, 2020, as they are internationally valuable geological formations.
The Tabuchi geomagnetic reversal stratum in the Yoro River basin is the most valuable geological formation in the world that preserves the continuous record of the geomagnetic reversal that occurred about 770,000 years ago, the beginning of the Chibanian era.
At present, the access route to the outcrop is a steep, partially unpaved slope with three staircases. Furthermore, the river bank around the outcrop is slippery and sloping, and you will have to walk in shallow water. For this reason, wheelchair users are looking forward to improvements to the surrounding tour environment.
Construction of the tour environment around Chibanian has begun, including a new garden path and new guidance facilities scheduled to open in 2027. The facility was designed by Kengo Kuma Architects and Urban Design Office, and in place of the current temporary facility, it will provide an easy-to-understand explanation of “Chibanian'' and geomagnetic reversal.
