Barrier-free buses

From the perspective of wheelchair users, there are three types of buses: buses that can be boarded while in a wheelchair (Type A), buses that can only be boarded by wheelchair users who can walk up the steps unaided (Type B), and buses that wheelchair users cannot board (Type C). Please see 「Buses that can be ridden by wheelchairs」 for more details.
Type A buses include those equipped with lifts and those that use ramps provided by the driver. Lift-equipped buses are not operated by public transport companies.
Type B buses are mainly used for express buses (including those on ordinary roads, such as airport access buses and long-distance buses), and have a luggage room on the first floor and passenger compartments on the second floor.
Customers using folding wheelchairs must leave their wheelchair in the luggage room and climb up several steps to the passenger compartment on the second floor. Electric wheelchairs are often not allowed on board..
Type C buses are operated on route buses. They have two steps to board and there are no ramps or wheelchair fastenings. On average, this type of bus is used in one out of every four buses..
If you ask to board this type of bus, the driver will direct you to board the next bus. Some bus companies are kind enough to dispatch an A-type bus if you contact them in advance.
