CHI-BA+KUN
Built on Mount Kiyosumi, the second highest mountain in Chiba Prefecture, and surrounded by a forest of sacred giant trees, the stunning natural environment makes visitors wonder, "Is this really Boso?" The Kiyosumi Osugi is the second largest single cedar in Japan, and has an overwhelming presence as a sacred tree that tells the history of the temple. Just taking a walk around the temple grounds will soothe your soul.
Seichouji Temple is located on the southern hill of Kamogawa City(313m sea level).Seichoji Temple is 6.5km from JR Awa-Amatsu Station, with an elevation difference of 300m and an average gradient of 5%, and is built on the summit of a mountain. Seichouji Temple(Japanese only)
Physically, the person is at a level where they can fully operate a wheelchair and move around, such as with lower limb paralysis.
In terms of facilities, there are some challenges, such as stairs and slopes within a certain range, but they are at a level where they can be used independently in a wheelchair.
○The grounds of Seichoji Temple are divided into three blocks, with steps between each block. Block A contains the visitor parking lot and the Kiyosumi no Osugi cedar tree, Block B contains the main hall and inner gate, and Block C contains the bronze statue of Saint Nichiren. The elevations of these blocks are 313m, 318m, and 328m, respectively. Ramps have been installed to eliminate the steps at each block. Although the gradient is steep, wheelchair users can move around if they can use their upper limbs and are accompanied by one or two caregivers.
○There is a free municipal parking lot with wheelchair-accessible toilets 500 meters away, but you can also take the slope next to the Niomon Gate to the visitor parking lot in Block A.
○The paving at Japanese shrines and temples is generally gravel, but Seichoji Temple has stone paving road(The dark grey road in the picture below) that makes it easy for wheelchair users to move around.

The free municipal parking lot has a wheelchair-accessible toilet next to the wheelchair section. However, the 500m road to Seichoji Temple is narrow and the sidewalk is not divided, so we recommend parking in the temple grounds.
There are five steps in front of the Niomon Gate, so wheelchairs cannot get through. You should actually pray from the Niomon Gate, but in this case, you are also allowed to enter the temple grounds from behind it.
There is a large parking space for prayer vehicles within the Seichoji Temple grounds. The area is flat and covered with hard crushed stone. If you are a wheelchair user and would like to park for sightseeing, please contact temple in advance.
The main hall of Seichoji Temple is located on a hill and has 20 stone steps, but there is a small sign on the left side directing you to a slope called Onnazaka[女坂], so follow this path.
Onnazaka is slightly inclined, but with assistance it is possible to climb it in a wheelchair to the side of the Soshido Hall and then out to the main hall.
The main hall level is about 5m higher than the Niomon Gate and parking lot level, and contains the Soshido Hall, Hondo Hall, and Bell Tower.
If you past the main hall, you will pass through the Chumon gate and head to the main temple and treasure museum area. There are four steps in front of the Chumon gate.
There is a narrow and steep slope on the right side of the parking for worshippers that leads up to the main temple. Please be careful if you are using a wheelchair as cars also pass by.
There are 70 steps leading up to the bronze statue of Saint Nichiren, making it impossible to climb in a wheelchair.
The steep slope to the bronze statue of Saint Nichiren is a steep slope with five turnarounds. Please do not use it if you are not strong enough to push a self-propelled wheelchair and do not have a strong assistant with you.
The paving at Japanese shrines and temples is generally gravel, but Seichoji Temple has stone paving that makes it easy for wheelchair users to move around.
There is only one wheelchair-accessible toilet within the Seichoji Temple grounds. As shown in the image above, the toilet building can be accessed by wheelchair. The door is a hinged door, but there are also handrails around the toilet.
The Seichoji bus stop sign remains, but the mountain climbing bus from JR Awa-Amatsu Station will be suspended from the end of March 2024. If you are coming by train, please take a taxi from the nearest station.
