Iris (Admiring the flowers)

At a glance

Japanese irises bloom especially splendidly in early summer, even during the rainy season. Based on the wild Japanese iris, many varieties were developed, mainly during the Edo period, and it is said that there are currently more than 2,000 varieties. They are attractive for their graceful flower shape and moist atmosphere, and are known as the magician of colors because of the wide variety of flower colors.
There are varieties of irises that have dark blue flowers and varieties that have purple streaks in the flowers. If you look at the center of an iris flower, you will see yellow at the base of the petal stem. Iris japonica, a member of the same Iridaceae family, has white eye-like patterns at the base of the petal stem.
